Green pea: Casual British Restaurant In Greenwich

The Green Pea is a homely, British restaurant in Greenwich, South London.  The most recent venture from master chef, serial entrepreneur and restaurant owner, Tom, the Green Pea is one of London's most popular restaurants -in the top 50 of 17,000 restaurants according to Tripadvisor- and is certainly the favourite in Greenwich. The only thing more astonishing than the fact that a restaurant of this calibre exists in our small corner of London is the story behind it.

The Green Pea is situated on Trafalgar Road, Greenwich, within Hardy's - a classic-looking friendly Irish pub. The exterior is unsuspecting and looks as if the Green Pea is merely an extension of Hardy's, which is true only in that the two buildings are attached and that drink orders are passed between them. Once inside, the atmosphere is warm, inviting and homely. Critics might say that the decor is messy and out-dated but you find yourself enjoying it for what it is - a place to feel truly comfortable whilst eating, drinking and spending time with those opposite you at the table.

The furniture is mis-matched and well-worn. The artwork on the walls is an intriguing mixture of both professional and amateur work, none of which appears to follow any theme apart from that it could have been chosen by the varied interests of one individual. Think your grandparent's living or dining room; comfy floral sofas, longstanding hardwood furniture, one of your GCSE art sketches on the wall and some ornaments & paintings from their travels around the world dotted around the room.

So now you're in and are immediately seated by the friendly, truth-talking force for good that is Tom, who owns, manages and cooks for the restaurant. At this point you'll also begin to understand the hype surrounding Green Pea, as Tom's genuine kind-heartedness and immaculate hospitality begin to shine.

Tom has always refused to have menus in his restaurants; those in the restaurant trade will know that if you're cooking everything from fresh and you change the menu regularly to reflect locally-available seasonal produce, printing menus each day becomes a chore, not to mention a financial & environmental burden. Avoiding this, Tom and his small team of trusted staff recite the day's menu at your table and will, more often than not, discuss each option with you in terms of your personal preferences and what you can expect from each dish.

The food does not disappoint. Hot & steaming, each dish comes served on a warmed plate and with some sides of vegetables for you and your party to share and enjoy. Each option on the menu comes as described and is wholesome, simplistic, healthy and truly satisfying. Drinks come from Hardy's next door, meaning the selection of draught beer, ale, wine and spirits is good and reasonably priced. What's not to love?

When you visit, be sure to press Tom for an anecdote or two (not that he needs encouragement) and definitely take his recommendation on the day's best dishes. Enjoy!
