J. Rogers and Sons is an independent cobbler and shoe repair shop in Balham, South West London.
One of the many problems with our modern, linear, throughput-oriented economy is the amount damage done to our environment; the planet we call Earth.
When you get a hole in your shoe and resort to buying a new pair, two things happen. First, your shoes find their way to landfill. Even if you take your clothes & shoes to a recycling bank, very little of the material extracted is of any use, meaning your shoes will be incinerated or put into landfill soon enough. Depending on which way they go, the chemicals in the rubber and leather will either be burnt (releasing them into the air for us to breathe) or buried underground, to slowly poison the surrounding ecosystem.
Secondly, some new materials will need to be gathered to make your brand new pair. This may mean lots of leather, the tanning of which is one of the most harmful processes in the clothing industry. You'll also need rubber; a product most likely to be made in a lab using a number of damaging and energy intensive processes. Finally you pay over-the odds for a great looking pair of shoes that soon have the same hole in them.. nothing is built to last these days.
