Cummin' Up- Caribbean Restaurant in New Cross
Cummin' Up is a family-owned Caribbean restaurant in New Cross. The Cummin' Up brand has been around South East London since 1991, the year they opened their first Caribbean takeaway in New Cross. Since then, their epic journey through the years has seen them open up outlets in Sydenham, Peckham and Greenwich.
Richard, the proprietor of this fabulous food joint, is a true South London local. Having been born in Lewisham Hospital with strong Caribbean heritage, he attended Holbeach Primary & Catford Boys Secondary School. As such his knowledge of the local area, it's people and it's diverse & often often unbelievable history is unparalleled. So, if you can catch him in/around the restaurant, be sure to get an anecdote or two out of him!
Together with Sharon, Richard's wife of 34 years, and their 6 children, the family currently have Cummin' Up restaurants in Catford, New Cross, Brighton and Grenada... in the Caribbean. While this last destination might be a little too far away to go to for lunch, it is evidence that the food on offer here in Lewisham has not lost it's intricate, flavoursome origins.
But the story doesn't stop there. The Cummin' Up family's latest venture is a Caribbean/London Youth fusion restaurant at the site of their existing takeaway shop in Catford. The premises has been artfully reconstructed in such a way that the takeaway continues to operate in a smaller space while the restaurant is neatly situated next door. As of the 22nd of April 2016, this new restaurant will begin serving delicious delicacies including;
A "Jerk Tower Burger" with sweet potato fries; Ox tail & red pea soup; curried goat and a "Die Hard Apple Crumble" to finish. Wash that down with one of a wide range of smoothies, juices and mock-tails on offer and you'll soon understand the hype surrounding this place.
But exploiting a gap in the market for sit-down Caribbean cuisine in Lewisham was not the only motivation behind the restaurant concept... The restaurant is actually going to be run and managed by the family's younger generation, providing them with a place to express their skills, knowledge and creativity - giving them something they can call their own.
